In September, nearly
\n115,000 euros was donated to the Gift of Life cancer treatment foundation.The
\nfoundation council approved of the funding of the treatment of 15 people, seven
\nof whom are receiving the foundation\u2019s support for the first time, and the
\nsuccessful treatment of the rest of the people has being going on for a while.
\nAll in all the foundation covered more than 33,000 euros worth of medical
\nbills.<\/p>\n
The need for help is
\nstill high. There are many applications, but there are also many benefactors
\nand beneficiaries.<\/p>\n
A gift of hope and a chance<\/b><\/b>
For example, a 43-year
\nold family man from Tallinn is suffering from lung cancer. His three-month
\ntreatment costs more than 17,000 euros, a quarter of which he contributes
\nhimself and the rest is covered by the foundation.<\/p>\n
A 51-year old man is
\nsuffering from nasopharyngeal cancer. His three-month treatment costs more than
\n18,000 euros, a third of which he contributes himself.<\/p>\n
A 49-year old mother
\nfrom Tartu is suffering from bowel cancer. Her three-month treatment costs more
\nthan 7000 euros, a quarter of which she contributes herself and the rest is
\ncovered by the foundation.<\/p>\n
A 71-year old mother and
\ngrandmother from L\u00e4\u00e4nemaa is fighting bowel cancer and her two-month treatments
\ncosts nearly 4000 euros.<\/p>\n
Her son writes:
“Before her terrible disease, my mother was an exemplary grandmother
\nfor her three grandchildren. They went through plenty of books and played many
\ngames \u2013 she fulfilled all of her grandchildren\u2019s wishes. For the children\u2019s
\ndelight, their granny spent all school holidays with us and sometimes even
\nweekends. Before the disease a half-day bus ride was tiresome for her, but she
\nknew how much the kids were waiting for her and still undertook the trip,
\nsetting off from Haapsalu in the early morning and arriving in V\u00f5ru in the
\nafternoon. Now we sadly meet only a few times a year.
<\/i>
We truly hope the foundation\u2019s support proves nothing short of a miracle
\nand our grandmother will be cured of the disease that has ravaged her so
\nterribly.”<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n
In September the
\nfoundation continued its third year of supporting a 68-year old Tallinn
\ngentleman\u2019s fight with leukaemia. His three-month treatment costs 12,000 euros.<\/p>\n
He writes:
“I still have to admit \u2013 I am the gift of life! But what worries me is
\nwhat will become of me next, as I still have to administer my medications. But
\nit\u2019s not on the Health Insurance Fund\u2019s list of discount medications, thus its
\ncost is outrageous for regular people. My only hope for surviving and thriving
\nlies with the Gift of Life cancer treatment foundation.<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n
I have kept the true nature of my chronic illness hidden from my family and
\nfriends, so as to not burden them. I\u2019m deeply grateful for the foundation\u2019s
\nbenefactors and my belief in good people cannot be described!”<\/i><\/i>
A 62-year old lady from
\nP\u00e4rnu is going through nearly 14,000 euros\u2019 worth of kidney cancer treatment
\nwith the foundation\u2019s support. She first received our aid in July.<\/p>\n
Her life changed in
\nspring of last year when she was taken to P\u00e4rnu Hospital and then to Tallinn
\nwith an ambulance due to a severe nosebleed. After thorough testing she was
\ndiagnosed with stage four kidney cancer with several metastases.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019d never had kidney problems before. The news was terrible. I just
\ncouldn\u2019t believe it. Then the treatment began \u2013 nose surgery, radiation, kidney
\nremoval, capsules and pills. After all this I felt good, until May this year,
\nwhen my treating physician told me that while the metastases were receding,
\nthere was a new site. Sadly the Health Insurance Fund was unwilling to pay for
\nfurther treatment.<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n
At this point I felt that my family and I had been left alone with this
\nterrible problem. I became unresponsive for several days. Thanks to support
\nfrom my family and friends I managed to see clearly again. Dr Peeter Padrik
\ngave me new hope and the support from the Gift of Life foundation keeps it<\/i> alive,”<\/i> she wrote in July.<\/p>\n
But in September she
\nadded:
“Your help is priceless. After the first six rounds of treatment both
\nmy health and well-being have significantly improved. Once again I enjoy life
\namong my family, children, grandchildren and friends. The Gift of Life cancer
\ntreatment foundation, its volunteers and all the kind-hearted benefactors have
\nmy sincere gratitude.<\/i><\/i>
As I\u2019m writing this I have tears in my eyes, but they are not tears of
\npain, but of joy. Thank you for being there for us!”

Family man Alar \u2013 a shining example of a gift of life<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n
We were especially glad
\nfor Alar Tupp, a family man from Mustvee, who has \u2018built several extra floors\u2019
\non his life.<\/p>\n
We supported Alar\u2019s
\nmelanoma treatment in spring 2015 with an astounding sum \u2013 over 100,000 euros.
\nThe foundation was still very young back then and our budget was low, but we
\nreally wanted to help Alar and his family, whom the state had considered not
\nsufficiently \u2018cost-effective\u2019. Luckily, there were kind benefactors willing to
\nhelp.<\/p>\n
Alar recently went to a
\ndoctor for analyses and lacked \u2018the signs of a disease\u2019!
He lives his life to the
\nfullest, goes to work, loves his wife, cares about his daughter and enjoys
\nlife.<\/p>\n

We collected donations
\nin several places in September, such as at the Baltic Station Market\u2019s Night
\nMarket event and during Buduaar\u2019s markets. But it\u2019s especially worth mentioning
\nthat on 15 September a charity football game was held in P\u00e4rnu, where the
\nsponsor made a donation for cancer patients for every visitor and where we held
\na charitable auction, where Ragnar Klavan\u2019s FC Liverpool shirt found a new
\nowner.<\/p>\n

\nKantar Emor research agency presented a study commissioned by the SOS
\nChildren\u2019s Village Estonia, which showed that the Gift of Life cancer treatment
\nfoundation was among the most reputable and well-known charities in Estonia.
\nAccording to the study, the people of Estonia see the availability of treatment
\nfor medical conditions as the most important social problem in Estonia.<\/p>\n

Charitable restaurants<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n
\nUus Street) and Umami (at 141 Kadaka Road) are kind-hearted restaurants, as
\ntheir owners, Kristjan Pe\u00e4ske and Janno Lepik, decided to donate 250 euros a
\nmonth for cancer patients starting in September.<\/p>\n

\nT\u00e4navsuu, the founder of the cancer treatment foundation, published an open
\nletter in the Delfi<\/i> online newspaper
\naddressed to Jevgeni Ossinovski, the Estonian Minister of Health, asking why
\nthe state couldn\u2019t take over the funding of treatments that work well and where
\nit is clear that people have increased their life by several years or have even
\nfully recovered.<\/p>\n
\nwho have been helped by the foundation, at least a third have benefited
\nsignificantly from the treatment, which means they have gained one or more
\nextra years. 5-6 people have even been confirmed cured.<\/p>\n
\nmonth later, stressing that Estonia is a poor country and sees additional
\nfinancing of the Health Insurance Fund as the only possible solution to the
\nissue of the availability of cancer treatment medications.<\/p>\n

\nsolutions with Rain Laane, the new head of the Health Insurance Fund. We will
