There are many applications, but there are also many benefactors<br \/>\nand beneficiaries.<\/p>\n<p><b>A gift of hope and a chance<\/b><b><\/b><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>For example, a 43-year<br \/>\nold family man from Tallinn is suffering from lung cancer. His three-month<br \/>\ntreatment costs more than 17,000 euros, a quarter of which he contributes<br \/>\nhimself and the rest is covered by the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>A 51-year old man is<br \/>\nsuffering from nasopharyngeal cancer. His three-month treatment costs more than<br \/>\n18,000 euros, a third of which he contributes himself.<\/p>\n<p>A 49-year old mother<br \/>\nfrom Tartu is suffering from bowel cancer. Her three-month treatment costs more<br \/>\nthan 7000 euros, a quarter of which she contributes herself and the rest is<br \/>\ncovered by the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>A 71-year old mother and<br \/>\ngrandmother from L\u00e4\u00e4nemaa is fighting bowel cancer and her two-month treatments<br \/>\ncosts nearly 4000 euros.<\/p>\n<p>Her son writes:<br \/><i>&#8220;Before her terrible disease, my mother was an exemplary grandmother<br \/>\nfor her three grandchildren. They went through plenty of books and played many<br \/>\ngames \u2013 she fulfilled all of her grandchildren\u2019s wishes. For the children\u2019s<br \/>\ndelight, their granny spent all school holidays with us and sometimes even<br \/>\nweekends. Before the disease a half-day bus ride was tiresome for her, but she<br \/>\nknew how much the kids were waiting for her and still undertook the trip,<br \/>\nsetting off from Haapsalu in the early morning and arriving in V\u00f5ru in the<br \/>\nafternoon. Now we sadly meet only a few times a year.<br \/><\/i><br \/><i>We truly hope the foundation\u2019s support proves nothing short of a miracle<br \/>\nand our grandmother will be cured of the disease that has ravaged her so<br \/>\nterribly.&#8221;<\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>In September the<br \/>\nfoundation continued its third year of supporting a 68-year old Tallinn<br \/>\ngentleman\u2019s fight with leukaemia. His three-month treatment costs 12,000 euros.<\/p>\n<p>He writes:<br \/><i>&#8220;I still have to admit \u2013 I am the gift of life! But what worries me is<br \/>\nwhat will become of me next, as I still have to administer my medications. But<br \/>\nit\u2019s not on the Health Insurance Fund\u2019s list of discount medications, thus its<br \/>\ncost is outrageous for regular people. My only hope for surviving and thriving<br \/>\nlies with the Gift of Life cancer treatment foundation.<\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I have kept the true nature of my chronic illness hidden from my family and<br \/>\nfriends, so as to not burden them. I\u2019m deeply grateful for the foundation\u2019s<br \/>\nbenefactors and my belief in good people cannot be described!&#8221;<\/i><i><\/i><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>A 62-year old lady from<br \/>\nP\u00e4rnu is going through nearly 14,000 euros\u2019 worth of kidney cancer treatment<br \/>\nwith the foundation\u2019s support. She first received our aid in July.<\/p>\n<p>Her life changed in<br \/>\nspring of last year when she was taken to P\u00e4rnu Hospital and then to Tallinn<br \/>\nwith an ambulance due to a severe nosebleed. After thorough testing she was<br \/>\ndiagnosed with stage four kidney cancer with several metastases.<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;I\u2019d never had kidney problems before. The news was terrible. I just<br \/>\ncouldn\u2019t believe it. Then the treatment began \u2013 nose surgery, radiation, kidney<br \/>\nremoval, capsules and pills. After all this I felt good, until May this year,<br \/>\nwhen my treating physician told me that while the metastases were receding,<br \/>\nthere was a new site. Sadly the Health Insurance Fund was unwilling to pay for<br \/>\nfurther treatment.<\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>At this point I felt that my family and I had been left alone with this<br \/>\nterrible problem. I became unresponsive for several days. Thanks to support<br \/>\nfrom my family and friends I managed to see clearly again. Dr Peeter Padrik<br \/>\ngave me new hope and the support from the Gift of Life foundation keeps it<\/i> <i>alive,&#8221;<\/i> she wrote in July.<\/p>\n<p>But in September she<br \/>\nadded:<br \/><i>&#8220;Your help is priceless. After the first six rounds of treatment both<br \/>\nmy health and well-being have significantly improved. Once again I enjoy life<br \/>\namong my family, children, grandchildren and friends. The Gift of Life cancer<br \/>\ntreatment foundation, its volunteers and all the kind-hearted benefactors have<br \/>\nmy sincere gratitude.<\/i><i><\/i><br \/><i><br \/>As I\u2019m writing this I have tears in my eyes, but they are not tears of<br \/>\npain, but of joy. Thank you for being there for us!&#8221;<br \/><\/i><br \/><b>Family man Alar \u2013 a shining example of a gift of life<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>We were especially glad<br \/>\nfor Alar Tupp, a family man from Mustvee, who has \u2018built several extra floors\u2019<br \/>\non his life.<\/p>\n<p>We supported Alar\u2019s<br \/>\nmelanoma treatment in spring 2015 with an astounding sum \u2013 over 100,000 euros.<br \/>\nThe foundation was still very young back then and our budget was low, but we<br \/>\nreally wanted to help Alar and his family, whom the state had considered not<br \/>\nsufficiently \u2018cost-effective\u2019. Luckily, there were kind benefactors willing to<br \/>\nhelp.<\/p>\n<p>Alar recently went to a<br \/>\ndoctor for analyses and lacked \u2018the signs of a disease\u2019!<br \/>He lives his life to the<br \/>\nfullest, goes to work, loves his wife, cares about his daughter and enjoys<br \/>\nlife.<\/p>\n<p>Find out more <a href=\"http:\/\/kingitudelu.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=2b7484322bdea6a85b6b8afd7&amp;id=176de56482&amp;e=e84aa9d99b\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Charitable football games<br \/><\/b><br \/>We collected donations<br \/>\nin several places in September, such as at the Baltic Station Market\u2019s Night<br \/>\nMarket event and during Buduaar\u2019s markets. But it\u2019s especially worth mentioning<br \/>\nthat on 15 September a charity football game was held in P\u00e4rnu, where the<br \/>\nsponsor made a donation for cancer patients for every visitor and where we held<br \/>\na charitable auction, where Ragnar Klavan\u2019s FC Liverpool shirt found a new<br \/>\nowner.<\/p>\n<p>Find out more <a href=\"http:\/\/kingitudelu.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=2b7484322bdea6a85b6b8afd7&amp;id=c92b96a60e&amp;e=e84aa9d99b\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also participated in<br \/>\nthe Pink Football family event at the Sepa Stadium in Tartu, the summary of<br \/>\nwhich can be read <a href=\"http:\/\/kingitudelu.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=2b7484322bdea6a85b6b8afd7&amp;id=ef2348c320&amp;e=e84aa9d99b\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Gift of Life \u2013 the most reputable charity in Estonia<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>On 15 September, the<br \/>\nKantar Emor research agency presented a study commissioned by the SOS<br \/>\nChildren\u2019s Village Estonia, which showed that the Gift of Life cancer treatment<br \/>\nfoundation was among the most reputable and well-known charities in Estonia.<br \/>\nAccording to the study, the people of Estonia see the availability of treatment<br \/>\nfor medical conditions as the most important social problem in Estonia.<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"http:\/\/kingitudelu.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=2b7484322bdea6a85b6b8afd7&amp;id=4b854cbfc9&amp;e=e84aa9d99b\">here<\/a><br \/>\nfor more details.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><b>Charitable restaurants<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Leib Resto ja Aed (at 31<br \/>\nUus Street) and Umami (at 141 Kadaka Road) are kind-hearted restaurants, as<br \/>\ntheir owners, Kristjan Pe\u00e4ske and Janno Lepik, decided to donate 250 euros a<br \/>\nmonth for cancer patients starting in September.<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"http:\/\/kingitudelu.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=2b7484322bdea6a85b6b8afd7&amp;id=e36c8793f4&amp;e=e84aa9d99b\">here<\/a><br \/>\nfor further information.<\/p>\n<p><b>Who should fund the treatment of people who are not \u2018cost-effective\u2019?<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>On 6 September Toivo<br \/>\nT\u00e4navsuu, the founder of the cancer treatment foundation, published an open<br \/>\nletter in the <i>Delfi<\/i> online newspaper<br \/>\naddressed to Jevgeni Ossinovski, the Estonian Minister of Health, asking why<br \/>\nthe state couldn\u2019t take over the funding of treatments that work well and where<br \/>\nit is clear that people have increased their life by several years or have even<br \/>\nfully recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Out of nearly 160 people<br \/>\nwho have been helped by the foundation, at least a third have benefited<br \/>\nsignificantly from the treatment, which means they have gained one or more<br \/>\nextra years. 5-6 people have even been confirmed cured.<\/p>\n<p>Read the letter <a href=\"http:\/\/kingitudelu.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=2b7484322bdea6a85b6b8afd7&amp;id=e87f6fa608&amp;e=e84aa9d99b\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister replied a<br \/>\nmonth later, stressing that Estonia is a poor country and sees additional<br \/>\nfinancing of the Health Insurance Fund as the only possible solution to the<br \/>\nissue of the availability of cancer treatment medications.<\/p>\n<p>Read the Minister\u2019s<br \/>\nreply <a href=\"http:\/\/kingitudelu.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=2b7484322bdea6a85b6b8afd7&amp;id=424d37689d&amp;e=e84aa9d99b\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr T\u00e4navsuu and Mr<br \/>\nOssinovski still agreed to meet in the near future and discuss the possible<br \/>\nsolutions with Rain Laane, the new head of the Health Insurance Fund.
